Digifreedom Frequently Answered Questions (FAQ)What are the unique features of this website and book? The Family Guide is about Free digital formats and protocols, Free Software, Free Culture, fair use and other related topics, just like many other existing works. The Family Guide, however, is the first one to deal with all these issues together, showing how they are related, with an attitude, language and format which are really accessible and relevant to everybody, not just people interested in digital technology. What is the difference between the book and the website? The book contains, almost exclusively, information which is useful and necessary including for those who don't use computers. The Website also includes in-depth essays, tutorials, user forums, news and other material that would not find place inside a book. What is the difference between the "Opinions" section and the book, or the rest of this website? The complete answer to this question is in a separate page. Are you against Free Software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation? Not at all. We are against some excesses of some Free Software "supporters", and against some limits of what has been, until today, their way to advocate and live the Free Software ideals. It is true that the book and website are focused on Free (as in Freedom) Communication, rather than on software, and on the needs of non-programmers rather than software experts. The predominance of Free, open computer formats and protocols regardless of software licenses comes from this approach, and it is better explained in the Note to tll software hackers, the 7 things we're tired of hearing from software hackers, the Free Software Manifesto for all of us and in the relevant parts of the book. Why "All right reserved"? Why not a CC license? For several reasons. One is that not everything that is good for software or documentation is necessarily or always good for all other creative works. Another one is that we plan to use different licenses for different cases and haven't decided yet in detail which is best in each case. Authors' rights can be given away at any moment, but taking them back is not possible. Why can't I get a user account?Because the website has just opened. When it will be a little more stable it will be possible to get an account to comment on single pages, participate in the Digifreedom forums and contribute in other ways. In the meantime, please contact us via email. Who is the Digifreedom author? The Family Guide To Digital Freedom book and website are written and maintained by Marco Fioretti.
